Study the Scriptures

Along with praying frequently, Mormons are also instructed to diligently study the Word of God found in the scriptures.

What scriptures do Mormons use?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints uses the King James Version of the Bible.  Additionally, the Book of Mormon is also believed to be the word of God, given through prophets in the ancient Americas.  The Pearl of Great Price and the Doctrine and Covenants, which consist of revelations given through Joseph Smith and the prophets that followed, are also considered part of the canon.

In the Sunday School of the Mormon Church, a regular study program covers these books of scriptures in a cycle of four years.  During the first year, the Old Testament is the focus of study, followed by the New Testament the next year.  Then the Book of Mormon the third year, and the cycle finishes with the study of the Doctrine and Covenants.

While this is the curriculum for the Sunday School, Mormon members are instructed to study all of the scriptures in their personal study.

How do Mormons study the scriptures?

Typically, Mormons will set aside time to study the scriptures each day.  This can be a challenge with busy family, work or school schedules, but should be made a priority.  Mormons often start their personal study with prayer, asking for inspiration and insights from the Lord.  Next, they may study about a certain topic and cover many different books of scripture, or they may read chronologically through a given book.

An important part of scripture study is taking time to ponder and think about the words that are read, rather than simply reading through a passage.  Often the most significant insights and personal applications come during those moments of reflection.
